Kaspersky Review

I have been a fan of the other antivirus software listed on this site for quite some time but it was important for me in putting together this site to do some research and make sure I don’t miss any key products that you should be aware of. The name that kept coming up over and over was Kaspersky. Everywhere I went, whether review sites or forums or test grades: Kaspersky. After seeing Virus Bulletin’s latest round of testing and seeing Kaspersky Internet Security at the top of the charts I decided to give it a test run. Out went the software that had been installed (which did not earn a mention on this site) and on went Kaspersky. Guess what? It is really, really good. First off I ran some test viruses by it and it passed with flying colors. Then I scanned my computer, fully expecting it to not find anything, and it actually killed some malware that the aforementioned, unnamed software missed altogether. Oh – and I should mention what drew me to it in the first place: it contains parental controls to protect your kids. You can find a review of that portion of the software here.

So the professional tests and my own little trial runs have now told me that Kaspersky is a very good antivirus program, but what really had me happy is the options.  Lots and lots of options.  Most software will give you choices between full scans and partial scans, updating all the time or once in a while, and a few other basics and that’s it. Kaspersky, on the other hand, is not content just being an antivirus program. It really tries to be an all-encompassing internet security system. From creating a rescue disc to logging everything you come across online (and still being lightning fast) to offering a gamer mode (making sure your in-game self doesn’t suddenly die an untimely death because of some annoying scan) Kaspersky wants to be your one stop shop. And I can tell you that it handles everything it does quite well.
I did have some minor qualms with Kaspersky’s antivirus software. I found that the interface was a little difficult to navigate considering the amount of features in this software. I really needed to spend time learning where everything was at to get the most out of Kaspersky. The second problem is the price. Kaspersky PURE is much more expensive than its competitors if you are shopping for just one computer. The flip-side to this is that Kaspersky licenses 3 computers at once, unlike its major competitors, so if you are shopping for your family or even just for 2 computers Kaspersky will actually save you money. The third problem is that the parental warning that blocks your children from an improper site looks exactly the same as the virus warning. The chances your children will even read the warning to know about a virus issue, rather than just hitting their browser’s back button when the message pops up, is slim to none.
Still, all in all this is a really great product. It’s lightweight, speedy, and has a lot of features others don’t offer. In particular, if you are looking for an all-in-one software or are looking to protect multiple computers, Kaspersky Internet Security or Kaspersky PURE may be just what you need.
